Just 5 minutes up the road from Scotland Yards’ community is Point Lookout State Park. With a lighthouse, a Nature Center, and a Civil War Museum, there is something for everyone to discover.
For those who love history and learning about our roots, Historic St. Mary’s City is only 15 minutes away, offering reconstructions of historic buildings and exhibits to teach about the local area’s personal history. Historic and seaworthy, the Calvert Marine Museum is 40 minutes away in Solomons Island. While at Calvert, guests are able to see and experience Drum Point Lighthouse, which offers spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay. With information and activities for kids of all ages, Calvert offers a unique experience that teaches maritime history all while staying fun.
The Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center displays local works of art, and promotes aid in helping artists in their community to be able to craft and work on their projects. Interactive art classes are available for all guests in their artLAB, where locals and tourists alike can take part in learning a new craft and make some memories.
The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum showcases aircrafts and the history behind them. From prototypes and exploring naval aviation in space, to the upcoming Women in Aviation exhibit, the museum is a fun outing for the family.
In the mood for some fresh Southern Maryland finds? The Home Grown Farm Market is located at Lexington Park on Saturdays, where you can get homemade goods and products from locals. Baked treats and sweets make taking in the ocean sunrise that much sweeter, and there are some special memorabilia to take home to remember your time in paradise. The Newtowne Players is a theater company located in Lexington Park, down the road from the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. There are new plays year-round, making it the perfect place to take in a show whenever your vacation calls to you. Around the winter holidays, special family-centered shows are put on to help usher in the holiday spirit for kids of all ages. Over in Leonardtown, MD, there is the Breton Bay Golf and Country Club for gym facilities and driving ranges. Lessons, training, and memberships are offered for those who would love to putt on the Bay.
First Landing Wine Trail is the first settlement in St. Mary’s City, where pioneers made way to one of the historic wineries - the earliest recorded instance of winemaking in Maryland was right here, in 1648! Rich in history and tales, many events are held at the Maryland Wineries Association in First Landing Wine Trail. Primarily recommended for guests of drinking age, the winery is gorgeous and full of life. In summer, they even have a grape stomp! Local wine, snacks, and music are all listed online for dates and times.
